International Graduate student mentor & mentor Leader for 62 mentees from 20 countries

As an International Graduate Student Mentor and Mentor Leader at PSU, my journey has been nothing short of fulfilling and rewarding. Guiding and supporting 62 mentees from 20 different countries through the university’s pre-arrival connection program has been a privilege. This program showcases PSU’s dedication to ensuring that international students feel welcomed and supported right from the start of their academic journey.

In my role as a mentor, I’ve had the opportunity to connect with newly admitted international students, providing them with valuable information and assistance. Being a point of contact for their queries and concerns has allowed me to ease their transition to our university from their home countries. Witnessing their growth and development throughout this process has been truly gratifying and knowing that I’ve played a part in their successful integration brings me immense joy.

The personal interactions with each mentee have been the most rewarding aspect of being a mentor. Building strong connections with them in an atmosphere of mutual trust and respect has been heartwarming. Through these interactions, not only have I been able to share valuable resources, but I’ve also learned about their unique cultures and backgrounds, enriching my own global perspective.

Taking on the role of a mentor leader has allowed me to amplify the impact of our mentorship program. Leading a team of mentors has been an opportunity to create a supportive and inclusive community for both mentors and mentees. Collaborating with other mentor leaders to organize events and activities has fostered an environment where international students can find a sense of belonging and rely on a strong support network throughout their PSU journey.

Overall, this experience as a mentor and mentor leader has strengthened my passion for supporting international students and making a positive difference in their lives. Being part of PSU’s commitment to providing a warm and nurturing environment for our international students has been truly meaningful. I am grateful for the chance to contribute to their success and well-being at Portland State University, and I look forward to continuing this journey of growth and empowerment for both myself and the students I have the privilege to mentor.
